In 2024, we were holding on to a little secret for several months...but we eventually let the (bob)cat out of the bag!
Meet Trooper! Trooper is a year-old male bobcat who was found in very bad shape on the side of the road when he was just a few weeks old. He was cared for by a wildlife rehabber who helped him survive, but it became very clear that he was not a candidate for release - which is when they reached out to us.
Trooper has some significant motor skill issues - and we are not sure what caused them. He could have had some head trauma, disease, or congenital issue that has resulted in him being shaky, wobbly, and uncoordinated. He also came to us absolutely terrified of people, and his physical coordination got worse when he got stressed. The reason we kept Trooper a secret for a while is because we did not know what his quality of life was going to be like. We needed to assess him and give him a little time.
He has been living in the vet center where we are able to keep him safe from falls and banging into things there. Over the course of the months that he has been here, we have seen some big improvements – enough that we determined that he will become a permanent member of the CARE family. He is still weary of people he doesn’t know well, but that has decreased a lot, which in turn has made his physical symptoms a bit better. But, we don’t think those will ever disappear.
Other than his mobility issues, he is healthy. He loves his food, he loves watching TV, he likes being outside and watching what is going on when it is quiet and calm. We have also figured out that like most of the bobcats here, the quickest way to his heart is toys. He LOVES to play with anything on a string.
Now that we know that he is stable and we can provide him the care he needs to be as happy as possible, we will be sharing a lot more about him with you.
