Loving Adoptive Parents: Brenton and Amy Pavel - Forney, TX

We’re we heartbroken to have to say goodbye to Roman.

Roman came to use with severe sinus issues - essentially his sinuses were being eaten away by chronic infection. We were able to manage it for a while, but eventually we had to do the kindest thing we could and let him go. He fought with everything he had, and we did too, but his little body just wasn’t strong enough to keep going.

This loss hurt not only because we loved him, but because of everything these Asian leopard cats have been through since coming into our care. From the very start, their health struggles were overwhelming—lasting effects of poor breeding and the cruelty of the exotic pet trade. We’ve done everything we could to give them comfort and peace, but some of that damage could never be undone. We’re not the only ones facing this heartbreak. Other facilities that took in cats from the same neglect case have also lost them to similar health issues. Roman—and all the others—should never have had to suffer just so someone could profit from selling “miniature leopards.”

While we knew Roman would not live a long life, we weren’t ready to say goodbye yet. But in his final moments, Heidi told him what we all believe—he deserved better, and we hope his next life is kinder. Now our hearts turn to Loki, who’s lost his best friend, and we’ll be doing everything we can to make sure he has the care and love he needs. If you’d like to honor Roman, please remember: wild animals belong in the wild. There are so many wonderful domestic cats and dogs in shelters who need homes and who will thrive as companions. Animals like Roman are simply not meant for us. They deserve more.

Roman's Bio

In the spring of 2023, Texas authorities confiscated several Asian leopard cats and 12 hybrids from a breeding situation. Three of the leopard cats went to another sanctuary, and our friends at Wildwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Amarillo kindly took in the 12 hybrids - Bengal cats that are bred from leopard cats and domestic cats.

The remaining Asian leopard cats found a home here. Roman is one of the two males. He is the largest and the toughest! He really is a nice guy that just wants to have a good time, but being so little, it's important to act tough so people know not to mess with you. After quarantining the leopard cats, we decided to introduce them to Juno, our margay, since she is the same size and all by herself. The introduction went great, and all are getting along and snuggling with each other while they sleep the days away.

Unfortunately Roman and Loki have some health issues. Roman has permanent degeneration of his sinuses, which means he will have life-long issues with sinus infections. But, we will make sure he has the best care he can possibly receive here so he lives as healthy and happy of a life possible!
